About Sri Brahmanya Tirtha

Sri Brahmanya Tirtharu was ordained the 11th Pithadhipati by Sri Purushottama Tirtharu.

Once Acharya Madhva was observing Chaturmasya at Talakaveri. It is said that scholars belonging to the 14 Gotras of 60 families – Aravattu Hokkalu – Shastika Vamshastaru made a plea to Srimadacharyaru to administer the sacred Tapta Mudra and accept them as Shishyas. Acharyaru instructed them to perform Seva during this auspicious period and after completion bestowed them with Vaishnava Diksha. As they migrated to different parts of the country, one of the families, headed by Sri Ramacharya, settled down at Abburu village situated on the holy banks of river Kanva as their abode.

Sri Ramacharya offered Seva to Sri Purushottama Tirtha requesting for an offspring and was directed to perform Seva at Kambada Narasimha Devaru temple. Satisfied with the Seva, the Lord blessed him with a son who had the special presence of Surya, the sun god, and so named him Narasimha. Ramacharya’s sister-in-law also performed Seva and begot a child with the special presence of Dhruva, who was named Lakshminarayana. These two later entered Sanyasashrama with the names Brahmanya Tirtha and Lakshminarayana Tirtha (Sripadarajaru). Such is the importance of this Kshetra that Vyasarajaru had all his education at Abburu Kshetra.

Narasimha, even as a child, exhibited the art of giving Dana, which was closely noticed by Sri Purushottama Tirtha. After completing Upanayana and Vedic studies, Narasimha commenced his Shastradhyayana directly under Sri Purushottama Tirtha. Shortly after, Sri Purushottama Tirtha handed over the Mahasamsthana to Sri Brahmanya Tirtha and entered Vrindavana on Chaitra Shuddha Pratipada (Ugadi day).

Sri Brahmanya Tirtha then set off on Sanchara and established the Kantesha Mukhyaprana Devara temple at Kadaramandali in Uttara Karnataka. Another Hanuman temple was later established by the trio – Brahmanyaru, Sripadarajaru, and Vyasarajaru – at Brahmanyapura near Abburu, a place named after this saint.

Once, Sri Brahmanya Tirtha, during his sanchara to Aprameya Kshetra in Maluru, was approached by a chieftain (wrongly punished as a culprit) seeking deliverance. With his knowledge of the wrongful indictment, Brahmanyaru blessed the chieftain, who recovered. As a token of gratitude, the chieftain donated 32 villages in and around Abburu to the saint, who promptly distributed them to those in need. On another occasion, he visited Vijayanagara during a period of extreme drought. At the request of the King, he performed Varuna Japa to bring rainfall, and then departed secretly without accepting any reward. Realizing their indebtedness, Krishnadevaraya later donated lands near Channapattana to Vyasarajaru, who named the town Brahmanyapura and disposed of all the land to the needy.

Sri Brahmanya Tirtha was an extraordinary renunciate – Vairagya Shiromanigalu. After Mahapuja each day, he would do Bhiksha Sweekara from the Agrahara, bring it to the Matha, offer it to the Lord, and only then partake of it.

On a visit to Badarikashrama, he prayed to the Lord for a worthy successor. On his return, when he visited Bannur, he blessed a widow from the Ramachar family as “Deergha Sumangali Bhava.” The dead husband was resurrected, and the couple was further blessed “Suputravan Bhava” — with the condition that the child born should be handed over to the Matha. Hence was born Sri Vyasarajaru, who went on to make monumental contributions to philosophical literature and the spiritual legacy of the country.

Sri Brahmanya Tirtha was also blessed by Panduranga Vitthala at Pandharapura with an idol that is still worshipped daily in the Matha. Tradition also holds that he wrote a Tippani on Tattvaprakashika, though it is no longer extant. Sri Vyasarajaru composed the Pancharatnamalika Stotra, in which all his qualities are well described. Haridasas, starting from Purandara Dasaru, have also extolled him in their Devaranamas.

On Sarvajit Nama Samvatsara Vaishaka Krishna Ekadashi, after handing over the Mahasamsthana to Vyasarajaru, Sri Brahmanya Tirtha entered Vrindavana at Abburu Kshetra.
